Virginia Beach Shooting Investigation Could Take A Year

Anyone who hoped the criminal investigation into the May 31 shooting at the Virginia Beach municipal center would wrap up quickly is likely to be disappointed.

In a letter to city workers this afternoon, the office of communications wrote that the FBI “has indicated it might take as long as 12 months to complete their forensic overview.”

The letter goes on to say “they (the FBI) will have a preliminary report with a much shorter, although undetermined timeframe.”

This is bad news for the families of three victims of the shooting spree who have called for an independent investigation into the incident, something city officials have so far declined to launch.

City Manager Dave Hansen has said an independent study will only be considered after the criminal investigation concludes.

Attorney Kevin Martingayle, who represents the family of Katherine Nixon, reacted to the news:

“I haven't heard any explanation for why a criminal investigation must be completed before a broader independent investigation can be started. Both can proceed at the same time, just like in the aftermath of the Charlottesville tragedy.

“Procrastinating is disrespectful to the families of the victims, worried city employees and everyone else. As the old saying goes, lead or get out of the way. “
