Celebrities Can Bloviate. We Don’t Have To Listen.
Like many of you, I try to ignore the mindless bloviating of celebrities.
Being skilled at acting, singing or dancing doesn’t make one an expert on politics or anything else. Yet, in our star-struck culture many tedious Hollywood types opine non-stop. Worse, some folks actually seem to listen to them.
I’m a fan of Dolly Parton School of Fame. She’s a singer, songwriter, musician and philanthropist with too much respect for her audience to dabble in politics.
In fact, Dolly looked like she wanted to jump off the stage at the 2017 Emmys when she appeared with her “Nine to Five” co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and the two lefties started spouting off about how much they hated the president.
“I don’t do politics. I’m an entertainer,” she said after the show. “When I’m out there, if all else fails, I just do a boob joke.”
Speaking of boobs. Perhaps you saw Bette Midler’s latest attempt to stay relevant: A Tweet that was breathtaking in its ignorance. This wasn’t aimed at her usual target - Donald Trump - but at African Americans.
It drips with next-level condescension.
Last week Midler posted a picture from a Trump rally and used it to mock the black members of the audience.
Look, there are African American men in this shot. How much did he pay them to be “blackground,” Midler snarked.
What is the divinely prejudiced Miss M really saying?
I think I know.
This bitter 73-year-old white woman is saying that blacks can’t think for themselves.
She’s saying that whites can be liberal, conservative or independents but African Americans don’t have that freedom.. They’re the property of the left. They aren’t permitted to have a wide range of opinions like the rest of us.
She’s saying that the black men at a Trump rally were being pimped out. They were taking money to serve as decorations at a political event.
All of this makes Bette Midler a bigot. An insufferable one.
The underlying thinking - if you can call it that - is that certain groups of voters belong to the left. When they wander off that plantation, they’re fair game. To be scorned and ridiculed and sneered into silence.
It doesn’t seem to be working.
I can’t find anyone who’s leapt to Midler’s defense. Probably because her position is indefensible.
