Mazie Hirono: The Senate’s Worst Member
Hawaii may be one of the most exotic and beautiful states - I’ve never been there, but I’ve seen pictures - but its people ought to be ashamed for electing one of the most malevolent members of the U.S. Senate.
Mazie Hirono.
The repulsive man hater made a fool of herself during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings when she accused him of sexual assault.
“Guess who’s perpetuating all of these kinds of actions?” she griped. “It’s the men in this country. And I just want to say to the men in this country, just shut up, and step up! Do the right thing for a change.”
Now she’s accusing women of being predators. So much for the sisterhood, I guess.
Sitting before her in the Senate chambers on Tuesday was Amy Coney Barrett, a brilliant jurist, a wife, a mother, a law school professor, a woman with impeccable credentials who was thoroughly vetted just three years ago when she was appointed to the federal bench.
But Judge Barrett is a conservative. So she’s fair game. As bad as a man.
Instead of asking Judge Barrett about her judicial philosophy, what she may have learned while clerking for Justice Antonin Scalia, or to explain what it means to be a contextualist. Hirono headed straight for the gutter.
“Since you became a legal adult,” Hirono began, “have you ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors, or committed any physical or verbal harassment or assault of a sexual nature?”
“No, Senator Hirono,” Barrett replied.
“Have you ever faced discipline or entered into a settlement related to this kind of conduct?”
“No, Senator.”
How did she do it, I wondered. How did Judge Barrett remain cool and unemotional as she responded to this malevolent creature who was insinuating that this mother of seven - whose children were seated in the front row - had engaged in some sort of sexual depravity.
Don’t waste time with the this-is-just-a-normal-line-of-questioning excuse. Why didn’t Hirono ask if Barrett had ever killed someone? Robbed a bank? Drowned a kitten?
Did Senate Republicans pose similar questions to the saintly Ruth Bader Ginsburg during HER confirmation a million years ago? Was Elena Kagan subjected to this sort of humiliating line of questions ? How about Sonia Sotomayor?
The answer is no, of course they weren’t. They were treated with the respect they - and Judge Barrett - deserved.
I wish Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham had gaveled the hearings to an end with that noxious question and called the vote.
Actually, I’m glad he didn’t. It’s good that Americans are getting a glimpse of the way Hirono and the rest of the haters on the left treat those with whom they disagree.
And it’s good they’re getting to see how a strong, smart woman handles these halfwits.
