Watch Out Wokes. The Right‘s Embracing Cancel Culture.
As a conservative, cancel culture never held much appeal for me.
Take entertainment, for instance.
If I were to boycott movies or TV shows that starred actors whose politics didn’t align with mine I’d be limited to Clint Eastwood and Jon Voight vehicles.
As it happens, I think Jane Fonda is enormously talented. So is Robert DeNiro, Meryl Streep and Woody Allen.
I wouldn’t invite any of them to my home, nor would I want to meet any member of this crew for a drink. But watch them act? Heck, yes.
They may not be smart, but they’re talented. So no boycott.
Yet the recent spate of in-your-face trans folks demanding that we not only use their preferred pronouns but actually accept that men can become women and women can become men is causing me - and others - to rethink our hesitancy to stop spending money with companies that push gender ideology and other far-left positions.
Exposing children to trans culture is an absolute deal breaker for many of us.
Dylan Mulvaney prancing around in womanface and mocking femininity was too much for Bud Light drinkers, who spontaneously began boycotting the beer once Mulvaney became a brand ambassador for the beverage.
That boycott has been extraordinarily successful. Sales of Bud Light have dropped precipitously in the weeks since Mulvaney began peddling the brand. For the week ending May 13, sales were down 24.6% while Coors sales were up sharply by 23.2% and Modelo Especial saw a jump in sales of 10%.
Anheuser-Busch is in deep trouble if they don’t turn this around.
Now it’s Target’s turn.
As customers began getting a taste of what was coming to Target’s childrens’ sections during June’s Pride Month celebration, the right began calling for a boycott.
Some of the stores feature full-blown Pride displays - in the children’s aisles - that include girls’ bathing suits that come with “tuck” option to allow boys to hide their penises while pretending to be female and “extra crotch coverage” to help them disguise their testicles. Target is also selling chest binders for pubescent girls who want to hide their breasts so they can pretend to be boys.
Not to mention the Pride-friendly slogans on everything from onesies to teen clothing.
Many on the right want a Target boycott and - judging from social media, anyway - it ought to give executives at the company heartburn.
Last week one of America’s most popular podcasters, Ben Shapiro, urged his followers to stop shopping at Target. While conservatives can’t boycott every woke company, he said, they can target a few and send a strong message to corporate executives if stock prices plummet.
Reacting to a photo of the trans tanks suits, Megyn Kelly Tweeted:
“No woman needs to tuck anything. We have vaginas & we are the only ones who do. Oh and we don’t need are kids seeing this sh&% when we walk down the aisle at target.”
Recognizing that may shoppers have a Target “habit,” a number of social media influencers are urging their followers to boycott the stores for at least the month of June. Enough to rattle Target’s corporate bean counters and get them to toss the trans gear from the kids’ racks.
The left has successfully employed cancel culture for years, keeping conservative speakers off college campuses, protesting commencement speakers, costing comic Roseanne Barr a job on the show she created and demanding that executives who didn’t exhibit fealty to leftist ideology be sacked.
For instance, Jennifer Sey, the mother of four public school students and a senior executive at Levi Strauss in line to become CEO, says she was forced out of the company over her outspoken opposition to school closures during Covid.
That’s chilling.
Suddenly it’s the left’s turn to experience the wrath of offended consumers.
Most of us don’t care what folks do in the privacy of their own bedrooms, but once they start grooming kids, we’re done tolerating their foolishness.
