Dock Workers Strike Threatens To “Cripple” The Country
Due to my new and improved radio hours I can no longer stay up past midnight. Therefore, there is a chance this post may be moot by Tuesday morning.
Doesn’t look like it, though.
At 12:01 am, tens of thousands of dock workers from Maine to Texas are planning to walk off the job. This will be the first Longshoreman’s strike since the 45-day job action in 1977.
I remember that one. It was chaos in the ports and there were shortages around the country.
What happens if the bustling East Coast ports are shut down? Let Harold Daggett, the fiery president of the ILA paint a picture:
Oh, goody. He’s threatening to cripple us while Joe Biden and Kamala Harris suck their thumbs.
Good thing they drained the strategic petroleum reserves for political reasons and never replenished them a couple of years back, huh?
Think America’s going to realize what Biden and Harris did to this country when we quickly have nationwide fuel shortages due to their feckless decisions?
Speaking of the Dynamic Duo, they’re in a Catch 22 situation on the strike.
If Biden and Harris invoke the Taft-Hartley Act, which allows them to stop a strike and force workers back to the negotiating table for national security reasons, they risk further alienating union members who don’t much like Kamala Harris anyway. When the Teamsters voted not to endorse her, she became the first Democratic presidential candidate not to receive that union’s support in decades.
Lord knows, the Dems need union votes in November.
Yet if they simply continue to give lip service to joys of collective bargaining, the administration could be facing an unmitigated and entirely preventable economic disaster in the weeks before a national election.
Biden says he won’t use Taft-Hartley.
Pass the popcorn.
A serious administration, one that actually put country before party, would stop the strike. Closing ports for weeks will disrupt supply chains, strand cargo ships and cause catastrophic shortages of everything from food, to pharmaceuticals to fuel to cars and car parts. A strike will cost an estimated $5 billion A DAY.
The shortages would reverse any recent positive movement in the economy and trigger a massive backlash against the administration. Unless these two con artists can figure out a way to blame Donald Trump for the strike, that is.
Will Biden and Harris dare to stand up to tough-talking union bosses who don’t respect them? Do they dare tell dock workers that a 77% pay hike is outrageous and that automation is coming to the ports, like it or not?
That’s not their style.
The motto on Daggett’s shirt is: “A Force To Be Reckoned With.” Imagine either one of these two buffoons reckoning with him.
Harold Daggett’s goal is clear: He will cripple us.
Question is, will Biden and Harris stand by and let their union pals cripple the country?
