Nancy Pelosi's Hissy Fit
She had a chance, but she blew it. Nancy Pelosi, of course.
The Speaker of the House had an opportunity to actually do what Michelle Obama once claimed Democrats always do: “When they go low, we go high.”
When President Trump refused to shake Pelosi’s extended hand at the beginning of the State of the Union address - which didn’t look accidental, although I suppose it might have been - Pelosi could have behaved herself and claimed the high moral ground at night’s end.
She isn’t capable.
Pelosi immediately insulted the president by omitting the customary presidential introduction and substituting one of her own:
Instead of, “I have the high privilege and distinct honor of presenting to you the President of the United States,” she said curtly: “Members of Congress, the President of the United States.”
It is also customary for the Speaker to be a neutral presence during the address, especially if the president is of the opposing party.
Funny, I watched John Boehner during Barack Obama’s addresses. I don’t remember him muttering to himself, shaking his head, flipping through papers or encouraging hecklers to interrupt the president.
I don’t remember him coordinating his outfit with all the other fellas in his party, either.
If the Democratic women think it’s cute to go out in public dressed like sorority girls on pref night, they need to know that to a lot of us, it looks kooky.
I know, I know, they claim to be channeling the suffragettes, but someone needs to remind them that women got the vote 100 years ago and each of them was elected to Congress, presumably with many male votes.
Ditch the matchy frocks, ladies.
Oh, and I definitely have no memory of John Boehner maniacally turning Obama’s speech into confetti at the end of the night.
Nancy’s paper-tearing tantrum is understandable. Democrats are having a terrible week as they suffer through a trifecta of bad news: The Iowa debacle, a booming economy and the acquittal of the president. On top of that, the president’s litany of accomplishments in the Tuesday’s speech must have been especially galling because had Democrats put aside partisanship to work with the GOP, they’d share credit for the astonishing unemployment numbers and soaring stock market.
Instead, some of these sourpusses booed Trump’s line about “seven million people off food stamps.” You see, they don’t like record low unemployment if it makes the president look good. And they definitely find the notion of people being able to take care of their own families, without help from the government, unappetizing.
It’s been reported that Nancy got a standing O from a roomful of Democrats after her paper-ripping hissy fit.
That’s the problem with living in an echo chamber. Pelosi and The Squad have no idea how her behavior looked to normal people.
Churlish, mean and disrespectful.
Shortly after the speech my daughter sent me a screenshot of a Tweet from someone she follows who’s always hated Trump. Pardon the expletive, please:
I suspect he isn’t alone.
